When Teen or Young Adult Is
TRANSITIONING Out Of A Specialty School Or Program
Designed To Support And Integrate Lessons Learned While In Program
Without a supported plan for the young person's transition and reintegration into the family, many parents and students will experience a rapid erosion of skills developed and lessons learned in a specialty school or program.
This period of transition is the critical element in determining the long-term success of any program for struggling teens and young adults.
NEXT STEP FOR SUCCESS® TRANSITIONING Plan has been designed to provide families with ongoing, post-program support, coaching and education.
NEXT STEP coaches are available every step of the way through program departure and the first few months of transition as the students leave the safety of the program and test themselves in the world to which they return.
The NEXT STEP coach works closely with the family to establish home and family boundaries, to develop a plan to create safety and accountability, and to create a positive reinforcement model.
The NEXT STEP coaching plan includes:
• Liaison With Specialty Schools And Programs
• Assessment Of Family Needs
• Immediate Support For Solving Difficulties In Making The
Transition
• Define Family Goals And Values
• Continued Education On Parenting Techniques
• Support As Changes Are Implemented
• Assisting Family To Be Focused And Accountable
• Enhancing New, Positive Family Dynamics
Cooperation And Collaboration With Other Professionals
The foundation of our work will be the creation and implementation of a
Home Contract. This process begins with a visit,
up to 2 days, with the family in their home. During this visit a family workshop is conducted to clarify Communication Skills and Family Values. This workshop will support the development of, and provide the foundation for, the Home Contract.
Throughout the coaching, parents have the opportunity to choose from
several topic issues for more educating and teaching around
specific subjects that are of importance to the family - thus
providing an even more individualized approach to the coaching
relationship. Some of the topics offered are:
-
Conflict Resolution
-
Parenting Roles And Styles
-
Keeping the Wilderness Experience Alive
-
Fair Fighting Rules
-
Parent's Guide to Growing Young Adults
-
Negotiating with Your Teen or Young
Adult

"I cannot recommend NEXT STEP FOR SUCCESS® enough and know this has been an invaluable service. When our son transitioned home, together we created a meaningful Home Contract using agreed-upon family values. And through regular phone calls helped us keep it in the forefront of our relationships."
Washington parent
"I am a
strong supporter of NEXT STEP FOR
SUCCESS®:
what
they do and how they do it. I credit much of the success our family
has had with our transition to the help and guidance we received from
them."
Virginia parent
"Returning home after many weeks in the
wilderness can be jarring for anybody. It is essential that the
student return home to an environment that supports the changes and
goals for continued growth. NEXT STEP FOR SUCCESS®
understands the unique environments of wilderness
and residential therapeutic programs, as well as the complexity of the
home, and can blend the strengths of both to provide structure,
support and understanding as families reunite and continue their work
together. As a wilderness therapist, I appreciate knowing that a
student and the family will have someone to lean on, to work through
the challenges with, and who will simply listen and understand as they
practice what has been learned during out-of-home treatment."
